
Perhaps no item in history has been so vital, yet loathed simultaneously, as the cellular phone. The near-ubiquitous device often feels attached to us, but – as evidenced by the 2021 Advisory on Protecting Youth Mental Health issued by the United States Surgeon General – it is our attachment that makes it so harmful. Nowhere have these devices been more under fire than within the classroom as state policymakers across the country debate and propose mixtures of blanket prohibitions and use restrictions on student access to these devices on school grounds or during instructional time.
